Wow, this one is scary. Did you know there are folks out there who truly believe that cops should “check their guns at the door” of the police station? In other words, they think the firearm is a tool for work, so leave it there.
I wonder what they would think of this video. Listen to the calm officer. Heck, listen to his calm wife! This is a bad encounter with a good outcome. Also a note to all the officers who follow this blog: Remember, you never ever know when it is going to happen. Stay safe.
No update on the wounded officer in the news report. Nice reporting there!
Holy crap. That deputy sounded as cool as ice. I hope he is okay and piece of crap who shot him ends up crapping in a bag for the rest of his life.
Cops should have precisely the same right to carry off duty as do other citizens in that jurisdiction.
We’re a police family in Idaho and lately the small town we live in has been giving our boys a lot of grief over carrying a weapon on and off duty. They complain that it is “scary to see police officers with guns everywhere”. Very frustrating as one who wants my husband to be safe wherever he is.
Thanks for the post!
Kimber, that is interesting. At the risk of sounding simplistic, couldn’t you just have the officers carry concealed when off duty?
Christopher,
I see your point, however in many jurisdictions like New York and California, essentially no one can carry concealed. That would leave cops unarmed off duty. And that, I am afraid, would get cops killed.
Rather than cops have the same carry rights as citizens, I think citizens should have the same carry rights as cops. Any law abiding citizen who wants to carry a gun to protect themselves, and is willing to be educated and practice with it, should be allowed to carry concealed nationally.
Interestingly, in every jurisdiction that allows concealed carry laws, the crime rate immediately goes down…and tends to stay that way!
Christopher,
Actually you have it wrong. From a California cop, by statute all CA LE officers can carry concealed off-duty. The corporal dd a heck of a job protecting himself and his family. He was a shepdog, not a shep. When the time came, he was ready. My hat is off to you.
